NVAR Comments on Fairfax County Data Center Ordinance Amendment

Fairfax County is proposing updates to regulations on data centers, introducing new guidelines on noise, building design, and setbacks. In March of this year, the Board of Supervisors authorized staff to prepare a Zoning Ordinance amendment to strengthen current provisions for data centers while recognizing the economic benefit to the county. These proposed changes are part of a Zoning Ordinance amendment now before the Board of Supervisors and scheduled for action in early September.

NVAR is, however, disappointed in the County’s proposal. While it does mitigate some of the more problematic issues facing data centers in proximity to transit and residential development, it is also clearly designed to limit and even discourage the future growth and utilization of data centers in Fairfax County. This proposal falls well short of “recognizing the economic benefit” of data centers.

NVAR has a longstanding history of supporting commercial development that benefits the regional economy. A robust economy leads to a healthy housing market, adequate public services and facilities, world-class schools, and potentially lower real estate taxes.
