Updates Following Executive Order 55

03/30/2020
In response to today’s executive order issued by Governor Ralph Northam, we want to reinforce the following guidelines and best practices related to real estate transactions in Virginia.

Realtors® may continue to operate real estate businesses, but must do so in accordance with Executive Order 55 released today.

The health and safety of our members and the community at large is paramount.

Governor Northam’s Order should not have a significant change in the recommended business practices for NVAR’s Realtor® members.

Our guidance, in accordance with the Governor's previous order, has been for our members to avoid gatherings of more than 10 people and for Realtors® and their clients to observe best practices regarding CDC-instituted sanitary practices and social distancing in all aspects of the home buying and selling process. Open houses have the potential to violate the Governor’s 10-person guideline and could pose an unnecessary risk to the public. We continue to encourage all interactions, including open houses, to take place virtually. Today’s order mandates adherence to the 10-person maximum for gatherings, including those related to real estate transactions.

During the rapidly evolving situation regarding COVID-19, Realtors® are charged with following all mandated practices and using their best judgment to provide guidance tailored to each client and transaction. We encourage Realtors® to have candid conversations with their clients about whether this is the best time for them to buy or sell, taking all factors into consideration.

Adherence to the Executive Order is critical in order to ensure the continued ability of Northern Virginia Realtors® to transact business under the current circumstances. Violating the Governor’s Order could result in the imposition of more restrictive measures, such as those observed in neighboring jurisdictions.
