Tips for Media Literacy

04/26/2021
Media literacy is the ability to differentiate between forms of media and analyze the messages they are sending. With the abundance of information available online, including market statistics, public policy and local news, it is important for Realtors® to recognize where they are getting information from.

The Northern Virginia Association of Realtors® (NVAR) partners with the George Mason University Center for Regional Analysis and Bright MLS to deliver local market data for the cities and counties in the NVAR region. The localities include Fairfax and Arlington counties, the cities of Alexandria, Fairfax, Falls Church and the towns of Vienna, Herndon and Clifton.

Listed below are five steps Realtors® can use to identify credible sources of information.

  1. Read the information from a critical perspective.

  2. Examine the source.

  3. See which organizations are reporting or sharing the story.

  4. Evaluate the evidence and resources they used to obtain the information.

  5. Don't take images at face value.

It is important to be conscious of the information you are sharing with your clients and fellow Realtors®. These tips can help prevent the spread of false information and strengthen the media literacy in your Realtor® network.
