What information must appear on signs?

Pursuant to Virginia Real Estate Board regulation 18VAC135-20-190, signs placed on the property must include at a minimum (i) the firm name, (ii) primary branch/office phone number. Additionally, agents must receive written permission from the owner of the property to place a sign on private property. Signs placed off the property (directional signs) must at a minimum contain the firm name. For more information on where off-site signs can be placed, click here.

In either event, the information must be “clear and legible” (18VAC135-20-190) and displayed in a “readily apparent manner” (Article 12 of the Code of Ethics).

Remember, all advertising must be under the direct supervision of the principal/supervising broker. Brokers are free to add additional requirements over and above those set by the regulations.
