About

NVAR’s Realtor® School is approved by the Virginia Department of Professional and Occupational Regulation (DPOR). We offer all the education you need to not only earn and maintain your license, but to elevate your business and advance your personal and professional success.

DPOR requires Pre-Licensing, Post-Licensing, and Continuing Education — all of which you can take at NVAR. We also offer online courses with live instructors, solely focused on teaching to a virtual audience.

Our classes are taught by instructors who are local experts dedicated to helping Northern Virginia Realtors® deliver world-class service.

Education Requirements


You’ve decided to pursue a career in real estate. What’s your next move? This 60-hour, 11-day course satisfies all educational requirements for obtaining your Virginia real estate salesperson’s license.

Salesperson Pre-Licensing Requirements:

  • Must be at least 18 years of age
  • Complete and pass the 60-hour “Principles of Real Estate” course.
  • Register for and pass the PSI Virginia State and National Exam
  • Get fingerprinted and have a state-wide criminal history check completed

Pre-Licensing Course Details:

  • NVAR Course offered twice a year (June and November)
  • Cost: $275 (does not include textbook)
  • Textbooks can be purchased from the Realtor® Shop closer to the
    course start date
  • In November, the course is complimentary to honorably discharged
    military veterans with submittal of DD214 (In honor of Veterans Day)

NVAR’s Realtor® School can help you reach your goals. Earn your real estate broker license today!

Requirements:

  • Complete 180 hours of education.
  • Pass the state and national portions of the examination.
  • Must be a licensed agent 36 out of 48 months consecutively.

Course Details:
Cost: $310/per course (textbook not included)

  • 45-hours of Broker Appraisal
  • 45-hours of Broker Law
  • 45-hours of Broker Finance
  • 45-hours of Broker Management

As a new salesperson, DPOR requires you to complete 30 hours of Post-Licensing classes within a year of obtaining your license.

The Virginia Licensing Board at DPOR requires continuing education classes every two years. After completing your Virginia CE, you can then renew your license with DPOR.

The Virginia Licensing Board at DPOR requires 24 hours of Virginia continuing education classes every two years. After completing your 24 hours of Virginia CE, you can then renew your license with DPOR.

Salesperson first-time renewal (Residential)
Please note, your Maryland license expires every two years.

  • 15 hours which must include:
    • Contracts (3 hours)
    • Principles of Brokerage Relationships and Disclosure Requirements for Seller (3 hours)
    • Principles of Real Estate Practice (3 hours)
    • Property Management and Landlord and Tenant Laws (3 hours)
    • Professionalism (1.5 hours)
    • Real Estate Financing (1.5 hours)

These are mandatory topics and may not be substituted with other education or continuing education from another state in which the individual is licensed.


Salespersons and Associate Brokers (Residential)
Please note, your Maryland license expires every two years.

  • 15 hours which must include:
    • Legislative (3 hours)
    • Ethics (3 hours)
    • MREC Brokerage Relationships* (3 hours)
    • Fair Housing (1.5 hours)
    • Any elective course(s) (4.5 hours)

Brokers, Branch Office Managers, or Team Leaders (Residential)
Please note, your Maryland license expires every two years.

  • 15 hours which must include:
    • Legislative (3 hours)
    • Ethics (3 hours)
    • MREC Brokerage Relationships* (3 hours)
    • MREC Supervision (3 hours)
    • Fair Housing (1.5 hours)
    • Any elective course(s) (1.5 hours)

NVAR Realtor® School Class and Event Policies 

We look forward to serving your professional education needs and take pride in providing an exceptional learning experience at NVAR Realtor® School. Our staff is available to assist you with any questions at 703-207-3244 or at education@nvar.com, Monday through Friday, 8:30 AM – 5:00 PM.  

Please take a moment to review our policies before registering for a class or event.  

  1. Cancellation and Refund fees take effect upon registration for all paid courses or events.   
  1. Cancellation and Refund fees will vary with the type of course or event for which you are registered. Please be sure to read your course or event description before registering.  
  1. Transfers can be made by emailing education@nvar.com prior to course date. 
  2. NVAR Realtor® School reserves the right to cancel any course or event date, in which case a full refund will be made to all registrants via the method of registration payment within five to seven business days.  
  1. Weather and road conditions will be assessed by 7:00 AM the morning of the scheduled class or event time and then a cancellation or delay announcement will be posted on the NVAR website and the NVAR App or by calling 703-207-3200.  
  2. NVAR Realtor® School will refund your registration fee if you are unable to attend a rescheduled class due to extreme weather conditions.
