Looking Back at Fair Housing Month: NVAR’s Commitment to Equity and Education

April marked Fair Housing Month, a time to reflect on the values of equity, opportunity, and access in the housing market — and to reaffirm our commitment to upholding those principles all year long. At the Northern Virginia Association of Realtors® (NVAR), we believe that every person deserves the opportunity for homeownership, and we work continuously to support Realtors® with the tools, training, and information they need to serve their communities.

One of the highlights of the month was our event, Unlocking Doors to Homeownership: From Barriers to Breakthroughs,” hosted at NVAR Fairfax. This powerful session brought together industry professionals and advocates for a candid and inspiring conversation about the challenges and solutions surrounding the homeownership gap.

Matt Difanis, a nationally recognized speaker and trainer, led the discussion, offering both historical context and forward-looking strategies. He explored the systemic barriers that have long contributed to housing inequity and highlighted actionable ways to bridge the divide through policy, financial education, and community-focused initiatives.

The event served as a timely reminder that advancing fair housing isn’t a once-a-year effort — it’s an ongoing responsibility that calls for education, awareness, and action at every level.

NVAR also proudly participated in the 2025 Northern Virginia Housing Expo, held on April 12 at Meridian High School in Falls Church. This annual gathering connects individuals and families with resources and professionals who can guide them on their path to affordable homeownership.

NVAR Board Member Veronica Seva-Gonzalez delivered a featured presentation, offering insights on the local housing market and emphasizing the vital role that Realtors® play in helping clients navigate the complexities of buying a home. Throughout the day, our team engaged with attendees at our booth, providing information, answering questions, and reinforcing the value of working with a Realtor® — from market expertise to ethical representation.

While Fair Housing Month provides a focused moment for education and advocacy, NVAR’s commitment to inclusive, equitable housing is year-round. Through events, outreach, and ongoing professional development, we continue to champion policies and practices that support access to homeownership for all.

As we look ahead, we invite our members, partners, and community leaders to stay engaged, continue learning, and work together to build a more inclusive future — one home at a time.
