U.S. Senator Mark Warner Visits NVAR for Realtor® Town Hall

05/02/2023

This April, NVAR had the privilege of hosting Mark Warner, U.S. Senator and former Governor of Virginia, at our Fairfax headquarters for a Realtor® Town Hall. Senator Warner discussed his priorities in Congress, including housing supply, infrastructure, transportation and economic development.

While acknowledging the lack of progress in Congress around affordable housing initiatives, Senator Warner remains optimistic about receiving bipartisan support to advance homeownership. He shared his ideas for increasing the housing supply, which centers around renewing and expanding tax credits. “I think the tax credit components are going to be things that you will see renewal -- and, in some cases -- expansion of these programs.”

Senator Warner also highlighted the need to close the racial wealth gap and increase home ownership opportunities for people of color. He discussed his Low-Income First Time Homebuyers Act (LIFT Act), introduced in 2021 to provide first-time, first-generation homebuyers with a wealth-building mortgage.

Following a Q&A session, Board President Heather Embrey and CEO Ryan McLaughlin presented Senator Warner with the inaugural NVAR Realtor® Champion Award. This award recognizes policymakers who go above and beyond while advocating for issues directly impacting the real estate industry and expanding the American dream of homeownership. Senator Warner’s commitment to the betterment of the Commonwealth and the nation has profoundly impacted the issues that matter most to Realtors®.
