What is the Difference Between Bluetooth, Cellular Service, and Wi-Fi?

05/19/2021

Bluetooth does NOT use cellular data, but instead uses short-range radio waves to connect devices. Bluetooth devices can be in use even if you do NOT have cellular service or an internet connection.

The symbol to the right is what the Bluetooth logo looks like, when determining the capabilities of your lockbox look for this symbol.

Cellular data allows your phone or tablet to connect to the Internet via a cell phone signal. A cell phone plan that includes cellular data is needed through a phone service provider. You must be in the range of a cell phone tower for access. If cellular data is unavailable, a tower may not be in range, this often occurs in rural areas.

Wi-Fi allows your phone or tablet to connect to the Internet via a router. Many businesses, schools, public buildings, and even most households have Wi-Fi routers in use. Wi-Fi can be both public and private depending on the owner of the router’s preference.

Why is the Difference Important for Realtors®?

SentiLock is retiring the SentriKey® Cards, meaning the SentriKey® real estate app will be the main way to access lockboxes. While the app does work with the navy-blue lockboxes, they do not have Bluetooth capabilities, so you need to have cellular data or Wi-Fi to open the lockbox. The newer, grey lockboxes do have Bluetooth capabilities, so you can open the lockbox even if you dont have cellular data. With the retirement of the SentriKey® Cards, its important to know what your lockbox is capable of.
