In December, the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors authorized a Plan Amendment that addresses the office building repurposing application process for “activity centers,” like Tysons and Merrifield, transit station areas, and industrial areas. In the second phase of the repurposing discussion, the county is considering expanding this program to more easily allow the conversion of empty office buildings in suburban neighborhoods to other uses.
The proposal could repurpose vacant offices as apartments or other residential properties; schools or other public facilities; art and cultural venues; co-working spaces; incubators or start-up spaces.
A Planning Commission public hearing is scheduled for March 22, with a full Board of Supervisors hearing likely on May 1.
